
She subsequently started her own training company designing and delivering bespoke moving and handling training courses. Pam and a team of associates deliver a vast variety of courses for many occupational groups in a variety of settings. These groups and settings include; physiotherapists, occupational therapists, care homes, domiciliary agencies, residential areas for people with learning difficulties, clients with personalised budgets, both mainstream and special schools and larger contracts with NHS or Social Services departments.
Pam developed a 5 day trainers’ course which has been running successfully for 8 years at venues around the country and has just developed a new course for trainers for the Disabled Living Foundation in London and due to launch in October 2010 to help trainers develop their own bespoke programmes based on person centred care systems.
Pam also undertakes medico legal work acting as an expert witness in manual handling injury cases both for the claimant and the defendant. Pam undertakes many complex needs assessments for adults and children on behalf of case managers regarding long term manual handling needs.
Pam presented sessions at the USA National Patient Handling Conferences in February 2006. 2007 and 2009 . She also presented a session at an international conference for Nursing and Residential Care Concerns in Malta 2007.
Pam advises on moving and handling equipment design and the development of training programmes for Sunrise Medical and Prism Medical. She has worked extensively with these companies in the USA, Canada, Holland and the Czech Republic, as well as the UK, to help train sales teams in basic ergonomics, equipment use and good practice. She also developed a hoist identification tool with others that is now widely used in nursing homes and hospitals.
In October 2009 Pam started work for Work Fit Ltd in a part time role as their National Training Manager again developing training programmes for a variety of different customers.
Pam participated in the review and updating of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy’s Manual Handling Guidance as part of the External Review Group in 2008. She recently had an article published in the Journal for Chartered Physiotherapists in Private Practice entitled “Manual Handling Safety for Physiotherapy Practitioners: a balanced consideration” and has written an article “Assuring Patient Dignity during Patient Handling Tasks” that is awaiting publication in the US journal Rehabilitation Nursing.
Pam is the Commissioning Editor of “Column” the professional journal for National Back Exchange leading its peer review team and has recently been asked to contribute as an author to the 6th Edition of the Guide to the Handling of People.
